Hip? Who talks like that?

It’s the dawn of a new age!

I sit here writing this post with my hands crossed at my lap. I purchased a copy of MacSpeech Dictate. It will be interesting to see how well this program can transcribe my speech into text. It seems to be doing a pretty good job so far. I find it makes a few mistakes but the commands allow me to make corrections very quickly.

It’s even smart enough with its commands to just understand what I mean. When I got to the end of a paragraph I was able to say “New Line” and it did the right thing. We will see whether this new tool helps me write more often now that I can get my fingers out of the space between my brain and the computer.

Code Review On The Web

Mondrian Code Review On The Web

Here is an interesting video of Guido van Rossum talking about a code review project he built out at Google.

360° Light Field Display

This is just too cool. 3-D display with no tracking required for horizontal parallax.

  • Interesting fixes…

So I fixed my RSS and Atom feeds on this Wordpress 2.5 powered blog.  Apparently there was an extra blank line in one of my theme function files.  This put a blank line at the top of the XML documents making them invalid.

Interestingly, it also fixed the issue I was having with the Visual editor not working for new posts.  I have been beating my head against the wall for a few days on that one.  All better now!

  • Linode: Great Virtualized Linux Moves to Xen

I recently moved my domains off of Rimuhosting and Dreamhost to Linode. They have by far the nicest dashboard I have seen for virtualized linux and great prices too.

Now to make great hosting better, they have started to roll their machines from UML (User Mode Linux) to the Xen virtualization platform.

Xen has less overhead compared to UML. Xen Linodes have 4 processors. They support kernel modules. They support 32 and 64 bit kernels. We’re running the latest Xen version (3.2.1) which means we can support paravirt_ops kernels (pv_ops), which means we can have kernels newer than 2.6.18 (which a lot of our competitors force you to use). In short, Linodes will be much, much faster under Xen.

I am thrilled with these guys, their service, and their commitment to improving their platform.
